Ars Nova: Calliope Tsoupaki’s Choice
Composer Calliope Tsoupaki is guest curator of the Dag in de Branding festival. Together with the festival, Classical NOW! presents three concerts: at the Paleiskerk and at the Old Catholic Church.
Tsoupaki travelled from Greece to The Hague in the late 1980s to study at the Royal Conservatory, and went on to become one of the leading composers in the Netherlands. Her music gives voice to her Greek and Byzantine roots in a contemporary language. From 2019 to 2021, she was Composer Laureate of the Netherlands.
The festival theme is Ars Nova: new music through the ages. Tsoupaki pays tribute to the three composers with whom she studied in The Hague: Louis Andriessen, Diderik Wagenaar and Gilius van Bergeijk. The programme also brings together her spiritual mentors from the past, from Monteverdi to John Cage. In addition, we present the final concert of Classical NOW!’s brand-new composition workshop.

Dag van de componist
Composer’s Day has grown into a major national celebration, now in its fifth edition. Around 20 June, the richness and diversity of composing in the Netherlands is celebrated across the country, with 150 concerts and events in 15 cities.
As a prelude, Classical NOW! presents a festival in four parts. Two winners of the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize open the series with music created in the moment. Mathilde Wantenaar and Willem Jeths enter into dialogue with Schumann, Berg and Brahms, showing how the Romantic tradition still resonates in our time. Four composers from Rotterdam introduce their own work, performed by pianist Matthijs van Wijhe. And composers from The Hague let their voices ring out literally over the city’s rooftops, from the carillon of the Grote Kerk.

Experience the timeless fascination of Maurice Ravel’s music in our festival celebrating his 150th birth year. Twenty inspired musicians and singers bring his musical world to life in a four-day programme of songs, chamber music and piano works, framed by music of kindred spirits. Around four themes, works are heard in varied line-ups. Each concert is a carefully built total experience in three parts, immersing us in Ravel’s enchanting music.
