    Etudes

An ode to boundless imagination. A diptych full of dizzying virtuosity. Nathalia Milstein and our artist in residence Antonii Baryshevskyi each give a solo recital centred on the étude. Ever since Chopin, composers have written concert études that challenge pianists to rise above their ten fingers and the 88 keys of their instrument. Composers also seized on the étude to discover new sound worlds and expressive possibilities — a sunset had to be able to rise from a grand piano. Nathalia Milstein plays a recital around Rachmaninoff’s Études-Tableaux, opus 39, in which he turned paintings into tone poems. Antonii Baryshevskyi begins with Chopin and Liszt, and takes us via Debussy, Bartók and Ligeti to our own time, where composers still push boundaries in the étude.
