Breathtaking imagination

Ravel had the ability to travel through his imagination, capturing the essence of a country through music without ever having visited it. Few pieces of music sound more Spanish than his Rhapsodie espagnole. Yet, despite his mother being Basque, Ravel had never been to Spain when he composed it in 1908.

Like Ravel, we too are travelling ‘without luggage’ in this programme. Darius Milhaud’s sparkling suite Le voyageur sans bagage sets the tone for a journey spanning an entire evening to Greece, Madagascar, the Far East and, of course, Spain, a country that plays a prominent role in Ravel’s work. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Levental will sing a selection of exquisite songs from Ravel’s repertoire. In each one, Ravel conjures a unique atmosphere and palette of colours. His imagination is nothing short of breathtaking.
