Classical NOW! maakt festivalthema’s bekend voor 2023
1 september 2023 – We are working hard on our upcoming programme, which, like last year’s edition, consists of several mini-festivals. We highlight four themes. In Around Maxim Shalygin we present solo pieces, songs and chamber music by this high-profile composer from The Hague/Ukraine. A film portrait about him will premiere. The Ukrainian pianist Antonii Barishevskyi plays a central role: he is our artist in residence this season.
In Gaia, our sacred planet, we pay homage to our planet with 10 concerts. We present works by composers who share their awe for the wonders of our planet. The violinist Daniel Rowland will host a festival weekend with the musicians of his Stift Festival.
In A Portrait of Francis Poulenc, we pave the way for this underrated composer. We show his theatre one-act La voix humaine and present his classic The adventures of the little elephant Babar for both Dutch and French-speaking children. His ties with Germaine Tailleferre are explored in a chamber music soiree. A rich selection of his songs, chamber music and pieces for wind instruments will be performed in several concerts.
In The People United Will Never Be Defeated you will hear music from persecuted composers and from composers who speak out against injustice. The programme includes compositions from Estonia, Ukraine and Belarus. An Uyghur ensemble plays traditional music from an ancient culture that China is trying to erase. The Animato Quartet performs string quartets by Jewish composers from the interbellum period. With our pop-up concerts, we continue to make spontaneous initiatives possible.
