From String Quartet in B-flat major, opus 76/4
Steve Reich's Different Trains, composed for string quartet and tape, is
considered one of his most exceptional works. The piece vividly
illustrates the train journeys Reich took during the war years to visit
his separated parents, while simultaneously in Europe, deportation
trains were in operation. The string quartet captures the trains’ relentless motion, while the tape incorporates orchestral sounds, human
voices, platform and train noises, bells, and sirens. This minimal music
masterpiece will keep you captivated and on the edge of your seat for
half an hour.
The Animato Quartet combines Reich's masterpiece with works by Henriëtte Bosmans, a composer banned during the war, and Anton Webern, who ignored the curfew that proved fatal to him. Joël Waterman looks back on his Jewish family history in his string quartet Moonset, also a tribute to the famous sunrise in Haydn's quartet, which is also on the programme.
