A selection from Medtner songs, set to poems by Goethe and Pushkin, among others.
The Russian composer Nikolai Medtner left behind more than a hundred exquisite songs. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Levental and pianist Frank Peters came up with the brilliant idea to record them all for the first time. It will become a five-CD cycle. They present a selection of Medtner’s songs, which in his time were often performed in the salons of music lovers with refined tastes.
Levental and Peters strongly believe in Medtner’s music. “We want to make sure that Medtner did not write his masterpieces in vain, as he did not aim for immediate success. His music is imbued with the power of his spirit and the beauty in which he believed. We discover a new life in it.” Their enthusiasm has met with success and glowing reviews. Erik Voermans wrote in Het Parool: “They perform this repertoire with heart and soul. The level at which Levental and Peters convey the message makes a tremendous impression.”
