During the concert's introduction, musicologist Igor Sukhorukov will discuss the life and work of Boris Liatoshynsky.

A powerful symbol of artistic freedom

For decades, Borys Liatoshynsky (1895–1968) — known as "the father of modern Ukrainian music" — was silenced by Soviet censorship. His works were dismissed as 'formalistic' and 'decadent', and rarely heard — certainly not in Western Europe. It is high time for his work to be rehabilitated. Six leading Ukrainian musicians who revere his work are presenting a selection of his finest compositions.

Liatoshynsky's music sparkles with imagination, weaving the melodic richness of Ukrainian tradition together with the timbres and harmonies of 20th-century modernism. A beloved teacher, he shaped a new generation of composers, including Valentin Silvestrov. The musicians will showcase Liatoshynsky's versatility. You will hear the early, dreamy song cycle Moon Shadows; arrangements of Ukrainian folk songs; the passionate Violin Sonata; five poignant piano preludes; and his Second Piano Trio and monumental Piano Quintet, both of which were written during the Second World War.

In his introduction, musicologist Igor Sukhorukov contextualises the life and work of Borys Liatoshynsky.
